The Usutu Vaal Phase 2 scheme was a project to move water across the divide and consisted of upper and lower canals joined by a number of rising mains. I was responsible for the design of a variety of structures along the route ranging from pipe culverts to over bridges, long weirs, inlet and out let structures as well as elements of the canal design. The designs all had to be buildable with relatively unskilled labour and little mechanisation.

The Heyshope–Grootdraai Transfer aka Usutu Vaal Phase 2 consists of the Heyshope Dam, the Geelhoutboom Balancing Dam, pumps and canals. Water is pumped from heyshope Dam into the Heyshope canal and on to the Geelhoutboom Balancing Dam. from there it is pumped into Morgenstond Dam via a canal and to the Balmoral canal. from the Balmoral canal, water is transferred into the Little Vaal river and on to Grootdraai Dam.
